about chicago artist stylist fashion designer wan ali

I was Born and Raised in Chicago, an Artist Stylist Fashion Designer to The STARS & Founder Creator of WAN ALI and WAN WEAR

Coming Soon Is My Book ” WAN ALI from The HOOD to Living With The JACKSONS ” Yes It’s I Talk about being born and raised up in the roughest Projects in Chicago, both Cabrini Green and The Robert Taylor Projects. My Parents didn’t raise me I only saw my Mom 5 times in my Life when I was a Kid and I only saw my Dad once a month when He came to Pay The Old Evil Lady that He found to Raise me and my to brothers. I found out he was The Legendary JAZZ Trumpet Player Rashid Ali, Yes He was The Legendary Jazz Artist Sonny Rollins right hand man and Trumpet Player, They Played all over The World even in Paris and Japan from the Late 50s to Late 60s. But before then He Played for Count Basie, Coltrane, Art Monk, Miles Davis , B.B.King and Ray Charles, He even told me he was one of the guys who use to load the needle up with Herion so Ray can get High. But Later somehow he fell down on his luck, Yes This KOREAN WAR VET. Yes I remember  we were living in Cabrini Green Projects, while our parents were gone I taught myself to Draw pictures at 4 years and got better over the years but I remember being there with my older brothers and little sister hungry and all alone a many days then my mother was taken away. Then one day I remember the Police putting us out So It Important no more so he asked our Real Grand Mother first can he pay her to raise his 3 Boys and 1 girl well she said Not the Boys just the Girl. So She Got to stay in a real nice Affluent Black not knowing what it was ever like to be broke or walk anywhere long. While can remember to this day me being 5 years old my Father had to leave her home in the cold pushing and dragging me and my two brothers in a stroller in a Blizzard of 5 feet of Snow trying to find someone to raise us. Well first it was Ms.Gertures who was really kinda nice, then Finally Here comes thee Evil Old LILLIE Tucker who agreed to raise us But which was Secretly like being on the Plantation in Mississippi Hoe House. Like She would Feed and take care of Hustlers, Gamblers, Prostitutes, Gangers and Thieves before the Kids in the House unless it was her two Grand Babies even though She was being paid to raise us, oh and she would let these Slick people and Strangers Spend Nights. Oh yes while waking us up to clean their mess up or thing that got broke for the many Fights the old people had in the house. Also She would wake us up on a School night to make us run to the Store even though I was 7years old at 2 am in the morning to walk 25 blocks to risk being robbed by Thugs to get some Liquor to drink Cigeretts a pair of dice a Deck of Cards Sardines Hog Head Souse Crackers and bag of Pork Skins. Yes, and the Store owner would give it to You cause all you needed was a note from a parent in those days. So I only say my dad once a month when after she lied and told him we were bad and we weren’t so He would beat us and She had already Beat us for Just moving to Slow. So when I Got 16 years I finally had enough and left that house their I had a Friend name CALVIN EUBANKS who had Bough a car with no Alarm on It so he agreed to let me and his cousin stay in his Car even in the Winter nights and he would sneak us in his sisters house in the morning to let us washup . Until I saved up enough Money and bought my own car I left at 16 years old and like so many others in the big city trying to stay alive and survive righteously buy stay out of trouble and trying to make an Honest Buck. And do you know I have no regrets with this woman until the day she died I guess because this was thee only way she knew how to Live. Because of his talents, his style and his determination to succeed, through even the roughest times. The same thing would happen when he’d be in school or at The Art Institute of Chicago where he endured racism at its highest, but that just made him stronger. Even though at school it was a different song, being one of the only black person in the whole class of all whites who were the ages from 28 to 52 while he was only 15years old there in the Class on an ART Scholarship he got. Being the youngest in most of his classes, whites and others would sit around his table and ides, Wan was too young and being black at that time in life they weren’t ready for him for the big job promotions.

Now, a new problem, and police badly judging him and others, mainly because of the clothing they wore, even if they were new. Kids will always express themselves in different ways, It doesn’t mean that they are all up to no good, just because they are living in the inner city. Later on in life. moving and living in many different cities, north and south across the U.S.A. he would make lots of friends and they would patronize and support whatever he’s doing. Maybe because he brought something different to their city. Wan moved back to L.A. selling Hats and items to people, celebrities, and sports figures with his WAN Symbol: which he designed back in 1985 that he’d leave his mark on luxury cars, trucks, bikes, boats, etc. after adding his artistic touch. Tired of the paint and chemical smells fir health reasons, Wan moved on to a new love. So now It’s later in the 1990’s and with that, came fashion design, needing a name, he came up with WAN WEAR.
